How to Source Hair from Vietnam: A Step-by-Step Guide

Vietnam has become the world's most important source of premium raw hair over the past 15 years. But sourcing directly from Vietnamese factories is still intimidating for buyers who haven't done it before. This guide covers everything from first contact to customs clearance.

Vietnamese women in the northern provinces have a long tradition of growing their hair well past shoulder length without chemical treatment. The result is unusually thick, cuticle-intact hair with natural tensile strength. Northern Vietnam — particularly the areas around Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, and Ha Giang — produces the densest, most consistent raw hair in Southeast Asia.

Vietnam's manufacturing infrastructure has also matured significantly. Factories that started as small workshops in the 2000s now operate at scale with international certifications, English-speaking sales teams, and established logistics channels to Lagos, London, and Los Angeles.

Alibaba and trade directories are a starting point, but they're full of trading companies (middlemen) posing as factories. Ask directly: 'Can you share photos of your production floor and your factory registration certificate?' Legitimate factories will comply immediately.

Trade shows — particularly the Canton Fair in Guangzhou and Vietnam's own Vietnam Int'l Trade Fair — are the most reliable way to meet verified manufacturers in person. The investment in a trip pays back quickly in margin saved by cutting out intermediaries.

Referrals from other salon owners and distributors in your network are underrated. Someone who has been ordering successfully for two years from a factory is the best reference you'll find.

Never place a bulk order without testing samples first. Request at least two bundles at your target length and texture. A reputable factory will charge $30–80 for a sample set (covering production and DHL shipping) and will deduct this from your first bulk order.

Evaluate samples on: weight (should match stated weight ±5%), draw ratio (double-drawn should have consistent thickness from root to tip), color consistency across the bundle, and how the hair behaves after washing and heat styling.

If a supplier offers free samples, be cautious — they may be sending show samples (their best stock) rather than representative production samples.

Most Vietnamese factories have MOQs of 20–50 bundles per texture/length combination. Don't expect a factory to process an order of 5 bundles — the setup cost isn't worth it for them.

Factory-direct pricing for raw Vietnamese bundles typically ranges $18–45 per bundle depending on length (short lengths are cheaper), draw ratio (double-drawn costs 30–40% more than single-drawn), and order volume. Always negotiate a price break at 100+ units.

Get pricing confirmed in writing via email before transferring any payment. Ask for a proforma invoice with the exact unit prices, product specifications, and delivery timeline.

For small first orders (under 5kg), DHL or FedEx express is the fastest and simplest option. Transit time to Lagos is typically 3–6 days. Declare the value accurately — hair products are taxable on import into Nigeria.

For larger orders, sea freight via FCL (full container) or LCL (less than container load) significantly cuts per-unit shipping cost. Work with a licensed freight forwarder who has experience with Nigeria's import documentation requirements.

Keep all factory invoices and packing lists. Customs in most African markets will require a commercial invoice, packing list, and sometimes a phytosanitary certificate for hair products.
